Botanical Name: Mentha spicata

Botany and Origins: Spearmint is a hardy branched perennial herb with bright green, lance-shaped leaves with finely toothed edges and a smooth surface. Although it is native to Europe, it is now common to much of North America and western Asia. The USA is the major producer of spearmint. Smaller quantities of spearmint oil are produced in Europe. IN some countries, the use of mint as a culinary herb and herbal tea does not differentiate between spearmint and Mentha viridis, known as "The Garden Mint'.

Method of Extraction: Spearmint oil is produced by steam distillation of the fresh flowering tops.

Cultivation: Conventional

Historical and Traditional Uses: The use of spearmint dates back to the ancient Greeks who used it in their bath water. The Romans introduced spearmint into Britain where it was used to stop milk from curdling. In medieval times, it became a feature in oral hygiene and was used to heal sore gums and for whitening teeth. Spearmint has been used in Western and Eastern cultures as an aromatic, stomachic, stimulant, antiseptic, local anaesthetic and antispasmodic in treating indigestion. Spearmint oil is primarily used as a flavouring in toothpaste, chewing gum, candy, and mouthwashes.

Pharmacology and Clinical Studies: Spearmint is reported as having antimicrobial properties.

Indications:

  • Digestive System: Spearmint shares similar properties to peppermint. It has only a trace amount of menthol so it is less harsh on the skin. This makes spearmint an excellent choice for children with digestive problems, such as nausea, flatulence and constipation and diarrhoea. Spearmint oil is recommended for indigiestion, hepatobiliary disorders and it relieves flatulence, hiccups and nausea.
  • Nervous System: Spearmint oil has an uplifting effect, reducing mental strain and fatigue, stress and depression.
  • Respiratory System: Used as an inhalation, it can be used to decongest sinus problems, catarrhal conditions and asthma.
  • Skin Care: Spearmint is recommended for the treatment of acne, dermatitis and congested skin.

Safety: Spearmint oil is non-toxic, non-irritating and non-sensitising.
