Botanical Name: Salvia officinalis

Botany and Origins: It is a small, evergreen, shrubby perennial woody stem near the base and herbaceous ones above. It is a native of the Mediterranean region and is cultivated worldwide. It is produced in Bosnia and also produced in the USA, Bulgaria, Turkey, Malta, France and Germany. 

Method of Extraction: Sage oil is steam distilled from the dried leaves.

Historical and Traditional Uses: The generic name Salvia is derived from the Latin salvare, meaning 'to save', which refers to its medicinal properties. Sage is reputed to provoke urine, bring down women's courses, stops the bleeding of wounds and cleanses foul ulcers and sores. Nowadays, sage is used as a tonic, digestive, astringent and antispasmodic. It is used as a tea or infusion, it is used to reduce perspiration, to stop the flow of milk, to treat nervous conditions, dysmenorrhea, diarrhoea, gastritis and sore throat. Sage is commonly used as a flavour ingredient in food products.

Pharmacology and Clinical Studies: Sage oil has been reported as having antispasmodic effects. A clinical trial identified sage as exhibiting significant hypoglycaemic activity. Sage oil is reported to have significant antimicrobial activity on oral bacteria responsible for the development of dental disease. A clinical trial also identified that the ketone components of sage are responsible for an increase in epileptiform seizures.

Indications:

  • Digestive System: Sage strengthens and promotes digestion. It is recommended where there is a loss of appetite.
  • Musculoskeletal System: Sage is recommended for treating rheumatism and arthritis. It is very warming and could be used by male athletes who are undergoing intensive training.
  • Nervous System: The oil is recommended for general nervous debility.
  • Reproductive System: Sage oil has a beneficial effect on the female reproductive system. It is said to imitate the hormone oestrogen, thereby regulating the menstrual cycle. It is particularly beneficial for treating delayed, scanty or no menstruation with cramp and for menopausal problems, particularly sweating. It is a remarkable oil that brings rapid relief in the case of painful periods.
  • Respiratory System: It has expectorant and mucolytic properties.
  • Skin Care: It is reputed to be highly regenerative in skin care. A blend of sage, immortelle and rosehip oil is recommended for slow healing wounds. Sage is a regulator of seborrhoea and is recommended for the treatment of acne, dermatitis, eczema, dandruff and hair loss. It is also recommended for atonic wounds, sores, ulcers, insect bites and regulating sweating.

Safety: Sage oil should only be used by professional aromatherapists. It is contra-indicated in pregnancy and prolonged use may cause epileptiform convulsions. Hence, it should be used only with great caution and should not be used during pregnancy, for young children or anyone suffering from epilepsy and high blood pressure.
