Botanical Name: Cistus ladaniferus

Botany and Origins: Rock Rose, also known as Cistus or Labdanum, is a resinous exudate from a small, wild growing shrub, up to 3m with lance-shaped leaves that are viscid above and densely white woolly beneath. The plant originates in the mountainous coastal regions of the eastern Mediterranean countries and the Middle East. Spain is the major producer of cistus gum, while France is the major producer of the absolute.

Method of Extraction: The oil is obtained from the gum, which is obtained by boiling the leaves and twigs in water.

Cultivation: Certified Organic

Historical and Traditional Uses: Rock Rose was imported into Ancient Egypt from Crete. The resin was extensively used in Egypt as a perfume and as an incense. At the time of Christ, an incense was made using frankincense and myrrh from Arabia, galbanum and 'onycha'. The latter has been identified as gum labdanum, which is exuded from the leaves of rock rose. The oil has been used in Europe since the Middle Ages. The oil was used in ointments and compresses to treat infected wounds and skin ulcers. The oil is also used as a fixative in many perfumes.

Pharmacology and Clinical Studies: Rock Rose essential oil is reported to have antimicrobial activities against Staphylococus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans.

Indications:

  • Integumentary System: The oil is well known for its wound healing and is recommended for the treatment of ulcers and wounds. It is recommended to blend rock rose with salvia officinalis (Sage) and lavandula officinalis (Lavender) for the treatment of bedsores. It is also recommended to blend rock rose, cypress and lavender for varicose ulcers. The oil has been effectively used for treating chronic skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis. It is considered one of the fastest, acting oils to stop bleeding from an open wound.
  • Lymphatic System: Rock Rose is beneficial in a massage oil for increasing lymphatic drainage. For swollen lymph nodes in the neck, it is recommended to do a hot compress with Rock Rose.
  • Skin Care: The oil is antiseptic, astringent and tonic and is highly recommended for treating acne or oily skin. It is also recommended for mature skin and wrinkles.
