Botanical Name: Pinus sylvestris
Botany and Origins: Scotch Pine is a tree with leaves in two-leaved fascicles, deep fissured bark and up to 40m high. The essential oil produced from the Scotch Pine is the most widespread variety and commonly used essential oil in aromatherapy. It is grown all over Europe, the Baltic states, Russia, central Europe and southern European countries.
Other species which produce pine oil include the eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) from the eastern USA and Canada, the dwarf pine (Pinus mugo var. pumilio) grown in central and southern Europe, and the black pine (Pinus nigra) from Austria.
Method of Extraction: Pine Scotch is steam distilled from the needles, young branches and cones.

Historical and Traditional Uses: Pines are amongst the most important commercial trees. Most of them have straight, unbranched, cylindrical trunks, which furnish large amounts of excellent timber. Pine needle oil is extensively used in pharmaceutical preparations for cough and cold medicines, vaporising fluids, nasal decongestants and analgesic ointments. It is considered useful for rheumatic conditions such as gout, and an effective diuretic as well as a treatment for pulmonary infections. The oil is also used for room fresheners, disinfectants, soaps and detergents.
Pharmacology and Clinical Studies: Pine Scotch has antimicrobial activities. Limonene, dipentene and bornyl acetate have been reported as main constituents responsible for the antiviral and antibacterial properties.
Indications:
- Musculoskeletal System: Pine Scotch oil has a stimulating effect on the circulation and may be used in a liniment to relieve the pain of rheumatism and arthritis and for muscular aches fro over-exertion.
- Nervous System: It is regarded as a tonic to the lungs, kidneys and the nervous system. It is just as effective as rosemary and thyme for combating fatigue and nervous exhaustion. It is recommended during times of convalescence or following an illness that leaves one feeling weak or with severe psychological stress. It is a tonic and adrenal stimulant and is recommended to be used topically over the kidney area for adrenal support.
- Respiratory System: It has excellent expectorant, balsamic and antiseptic properties, thus making it very useful for a wide variety of pulmonary complaints. It is considered one of the best oils to clear cold phlegm from the lungs. It can be used for sinus and bronchial congestion, coughs, asthma and bronchitis.
- Urinary System: The antiseptic properties of Pine Scotch indicates its usefulness for conditions such as cystitis and pyelitis.
