Botanical Name: Melaleuca quinquenervia viridiflora

Botany and Origins: Niaouli is a shrub or small tree up to 25m high with a papery bark. It grows well in swampy ground in Australia, it is commonly found along the coastal strip of New South Wales, all the way up to the northern tip of Queensland. Niaouli oil is produced on the island of New Caledonia, where is is referred to as Gomenol. Niaouli has also been introduced to Madagascar. The oil from Madagascar is preferred in aromatherapy as the oil from New Caledonia is often obtained by fractional distillation and is cut.

Method of Extraction: Niaouli essential oil is produced by steam distillation of the leaves and twigs.

Cultivation: Certified Organic

Historical and Traditional Uses: Niaouli oil is used in medicinal preparations, in cough drops, vaporiser liquids, mouth sprays, gargles and to flavour toothpaste. The young leaves were bruised in water and a liquid drunk to relieve headaches and colds and during general sickness. The oil is used for coughs and colds and applied externally for neuralgia and rheumatism. The oil was used as a vermifuge. In France, numerous pharmaceuticals containing niaouli were made up to the 1980s, such as a syrup for respiratory tract infections and suppositories for vaginal infections.

Pharmacology and Clinical Studies: The oil is reported to exhibit antimicrobial activities in vitro.

  • Integumentary System: Niaouli is recommended for cleaning minor wounds and burns. It is recommended to use 5 to 6 drops of niaouli in 250ml of boiled and cooled water to wash and clean a burn wound. It is antiseptic and a vulenerary and will therefore help healing.
