Botanical Name: Hyssopus officinalis var. decumbens

Botany and Origins: A perennial aromatic small sub-shrub which grows up to 0.5m high, with slender herbaceous stems arising from a woody base, bearing whorls of small purplish-blue flowers. It is native to southern Europe and has been cultivated as a culinary herb and for medicinal uses for hundreds of years. The major producing countries include France, Hungary and Holland.

Method of Extraction: Hyssop oil is steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops.

Historical and Traditional Uses: The name comes from the Greek word hyssopus, itself derived from the Hebrew word ezob, meaning good scented herb. The flowers and leaves have been highly valued since antiquity for their therapeutic properties, and it was one of the bitter herbs mentioned in the Old Testament. It was prescribed for pleurisy and bronchitis. It was also commonly used in the Middle Ages for its therapeutic properties. The herb is used for sore throats, coughs, colds, digestive disorders, intestinal ailments, menstrual complaints. It is a diaphoretic and may be used externally for treating skin irritations, burns, bruises and frostbite.

Pharmacology and Clinical Studies: Herbal extracts of hyssop have been reported to exhibit antiviral activities.

Indications:

  • Circulatory System: As a hypertensive it has a regulatory effect on the circulation and helps raise low blood pressure. It is recommended in a cold compress for the treatment of bruises.
  • Digestive System: It is a tonic to the digestive system and acts as an appetite stimulant, mild laxative, relieves stomach cramps and expels wind.
  • Immune System: It is reputed to have potent antiviral effects and is suitable for treating herpes.
  • Nervous System: It has an invigorating effect on the mind and is recommended for poor concentration, mental fatigue and nervous debility.
  • Respiratory System: Hyssop oil has a special affinity with the respiratory system. It liquefies mucus and relieves bronchial spasms. It is effective for treating colds, sore throats, influenza, bronchitis and asthma.
  • Reproductive System: Hyssop oil relieves menstrual problems associated with water retention during periods and is effective for treating amenorrhoea and leucorrhoea.

Safety: Hyssop oil should not be used during pregnancy or on individuals with epilepsy and/or high blood pressure.
