Botanical Name: Corymbia citriodora or previously known as Eucalyptus citriodora

Botany and Origins: Eucalyptus Lemon Scented is distinguished from all the other eucalyptus species by the strong smell of citronellal in the leaves. It is a medium to tall tree with an attractive pink or spotted bark and a rather sparse crown. It is confined to subtropical and tropical zones in Australia. Today it is cultivated and grows wild in Brazil, Zaire, the Seychelles, South Africa, Indonesia, Morocco and Guatemala.

Method of Extraction: Eucalyptus Lemon Scented oil is steam distilled from the leaves.

Cultivation: Conventional

Historical and Traditional Uses: It is used in less expensive perfumes, soaps and disinfectants. It is also used for the isolation of citronellal, which is a source of many aromatic chemicals including hydroxycitronellal and menthol. The kino (a red or orange exudate of the tree) contains an antibiotic substance, citriodorol.

Pharmacology and Clinical Studies: It has bacteriostatic activity towards Staphylococcus aureus. This is due to the synergy between citronellol and citronellal present in the oil.

Indications:

  • Antimicrobial Properties: Pharmacological studies indicate that it has bacteriostatic activity towards Staphylococcus aureus.
  • Respiratory System: It is recommended for the treatment of asthma, laryngitis and sore throat.
  • Skin Care: It is recommended for the treatment of athlete's foot, cuts, dandruff, herpes and as an insect repellent. It is also used in skin care for its deodorising properties.

Safety: Eucalyptus Lemon Scented oil has been reported to be non-toxic, non-irritant and non sensitising.
