Botanical Name: Canarium luzonicum
Botany and Origins: A tropical tree which grows up to 30m tall and yields a resinous exudate which is used to produce the essential oil. Elemi is native to the Philippines and the Moluccas, where it is cultivated. It is also found in Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and other Pacific Islands. Elemi is a member of the Burseraceae family, which includes Franincense, Myrrh, and Opopanax - all gum-resin producers. There are over 75 distinct species of Canarium alone leading to much confusion between other similar botanical resins, gums and oleoresins. Elemi has been called "Poor Man's Frankincense". The aroma is known for its transcendent qualities and is popular in incense and meditation blends.
Method of Extraction: Elemi oil is obtained by the steam distillation of the resin.
Cultivation: Wild Harvested
Historical and Traditional Uses: Elemi resin was used by the Egyptians for embalming. The resin has been used in the manufacture of incense, soaps and is used to improve the toughness of varnishes. Elemi gum has been used as a stomachic and as an expectorant. The resinoid and oil are primarily used as fixatives and fragrance compounds in soaps, detergents, cosmetics and perfumes. It is occasionally used as a flavouring ingredient in food products, alcoholic and soft drinks.
