Botanical Name: Cupressus sempervirens

Botany and Origins: The tree originates in the eastern Mediterranean countries and can be found along the coast of southern France, Italy, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, North Africa, Spain, Portugal and the Balkan countries. Most of the oil is distilled in southern France. It is an extermely old species of tree dating back to the Pliocene era (5.3 to 1.8 million years). It is exceptionally long lived. Some cypress trees are believed to be two thousand years old.

Method of Extraction: Cypress oil is steam distilled from the leaves (needles) and twigs.

Historical and Traditional Uses: Cypress was well known to the ancient Egyptians. The ancient Greeks dedicated the tree to Pluto, god of the underworld, thus the use of the trees in cemeteries. Cypress was recommended for severe cases of haemorrhoids with bleeding. It was also recommended for bladder infections and internal bleeding.

Indications:

  • Circulatory System: Cypress oil is renowned as an excellent venous decongestant and is used for the treatment of varicose veins, oedema and haemorrhoids.
  • Nervous System: It is suggested that Cypress oil strengthens an overburdened nervous system and helps to restore calm.
  • Reproductive System: Cypress oil is known as a menstrual regulator. It may be used to relieve painful periods. It is recommended for dysmenorrhoea, menorrhagia and menopausal problems. It is recommended for severe hot flashes during menopauses.
  • Respiratory System: Cypress oil is reputed to be effective as a cough remedy for the management of acute and chronic bronchitis and whooping cough.
  • Skin Care: Cypress oil is used in skin care preparations for its antiseptic and astringent properties. It is used for acne, oily and over hydrated skins and is recommended for excessive perspiration. It is also recommended in a foot bath for excessive sweating of the feet.
