Botanical Name: Pimenta racemosa
Botany and Origins: West Indian Bay is a small to medium size forest tree which grows up to 15m. It is a native of the West Indies and is cultivated in Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean Islands. It is also commonly known as Bay Rum Tree.
Method of Extraction: Bay West Indian is steam distilled or water distilled from the leaves.

Historical and Traditional Uses: The major use of Bay West Indian oil is in hair lotions, such as Bay Rum which was originally produced by distilling rum over the leaves but it is now formulated by blending the essential oil with alcohol and rum.
Pharmacology and Clinical Studies: Bay West Indian oil has antiseptic and astringent properties.
Indications:
- Musculoskeletal System: The essential oil may be used in massage for muscular aches and pain, strains and sprains.
- Respiratory System: Because of the high amount of phenols, the essential oil is a good antiseptic for the respiratory system and is recommended for the treatment of colds, flu, tonsillitis and viral infections.
- Skin Care: It is recommended in hair care as a scalp stimulant, a hair rinse for dandruff and for greasy, lifeless hair. Bay West Indian is extensively used as a fragrance ingredient in Bay Rum, in creams, lotions, soaps, detergents and perfumes.
Safety: The high content of eugenol suggests that the oil should be used with caution. It is a mucous membrane irritant.
