Botanical Name: Ocimum basilicum

Botany and Origins: Basil is an annual herb, which grows to about 0.5m in height. It is a native of tropical Asia and Africa. There are many varieties of basil cultivated all over the world. Each variety produces a unique essential oil which is dependent on environmental factors such as temperature, geographic location, soil and the amount of water. The two most commonly available are Sweet Basil also known as European Basil and Reunion Basil. For safety of usage in aromatherapy, Sweet Basil is preferred as it has a higher percentage of linalool.

Method of Extraction: Basil oil is steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops.

Cultivation: Conventional

Historical and Traditional Uses: Basil takes its name from Latin for a royal 'basileum', possibly because the plant was so highly prized that it was considered a king among plants.

Pharmacology and Clinical Studies: Methyl cinnamate and methyl chavicol have insecticidal activities. Basil ct methyl chavicol essential oil was found to have potent antimicrobial and antifungal properties.

Indications:

  • Digestive System: Basil is als useful in digestive disorders such as vomitting, gastric spasms, nausea, dyspepsia and hiccups.
  • Nervous System: It is considered to be one of the 'finest remedies' for the brain and a cephalic. It is reputed to clear the head, relieve intellectual fatigue, and give the mind strength and clarity. It may be used in all types of nervous disorders, especially those associated with weakness, indecision or hysteria. Basil oil is also recommended for those in need of protection, due either to debilitating illness and low resistance levels, nervous exhaustion, a constitutional weakness or a change in life resulting in feelings of vulnerability. It is also recommended as a carminative and sedative for digestive insomnia - people who 'digest' their worries during the night.
  • Respiratory System: Basil's antispasmodic property has a beneficial action on the respiratory system and is used for the relief of sinus congestion, asthma, bronchitis, influenza and whooping cough.
  • Immune System: Its sudorific and febrifuge properties mean it may be used for all types of fever.
  • Reproductive System: Basil is recommended for delayed menstruation, scanty periods and abdominal cramps.
  • Skin Care: It has been used in low dilutions to improve the tone and appearance of the skin.

Safety: Avoid using basil oil with chemotype methyl cinnamate and methyl chavicol as it will be an irritant to people with sensitive skin. Avoid during pregnancy.
