Botanical Name: Illicium verum Hook
Botany and Origins: Star anise is an evergreen tree usually 4 to 6m high, but may grow up to 12m. It is indigenous to south-eastern Asia, is extensively cultivated in southern China, Vietnam, India and Japan. The part of the plant used is the dried, ripe fruit that consists of 5 to 13 (usually 8), seed-bearing woody follicles attached to a central axis in the shape of a star, hence the name star anise. China is the major producer of star anise.
Method of Extraction: Star anise is steam distilled from the fresh or partly dried whole or comminuted fruits.
Cultivation: Conventional
Historical and Traditional Uses: Ancient Chinese physicians used star anise as a digestive aid, the treatment of flatulence and as a breath freshener.
Pharmacology and Clinical Studies: The oestrogenic activity of anethole is well documented. Anethole is a methyl ether of oestrone, and seems to have potent oestrogenic activity. Research suggests that the active oestrogenic compounds are polymers of anethole such as dianethole and photoanethole. Anethole has been reported to exhibit spasmolytic propertes, to stimulate respiratory secretions and expectoration.
Indications:
- Digestive System: It is well known for its effect on the digestive system as a carminative, digestive and an antispasmodic. It may be used to relieve dyspepsia, colic and flatulence.
- Reproductive System: It may be used to increase the milk flow of nursing mothers. However, for this purpose, a herbal infusion of the crushed seeds is preferred. It can also be used for the treatment of amenorrhoea.
- Respiratory System: As it is an expectorant and antispasmodic, it is excellent for any asthmatic or respiratory condition associated with copious while phlegm, coughing, wheezing or chronic bronchial asthma.
Safety: Avoid during pregnancy.
