Botanical Name: Leptospermum scoparium

Botany and Origins: Manuka is a small tree which is a native of New Zealand. Most manuka is harvested from wild plants as very little commercial cultivation is yet carried out. There are several different manuka chemotypes. The 'coast' type contains low levels of monoterpenes and relatively high levels of sesquiterpenes and triketones. It has been suggested that this accounts for its higher antimicrobial activity. In fact, Manuka essential oil's claim to fame lies in its high triketone content which is specific to the East Cape of New Zealand where the tree's ability to cope with harsh environmental conditions is legendary.

Method of Extraction: Manuka oil is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs.

Cultivation: Conventional

Historical and Traditional Uses: The leaves of manuka were used by the early Maoris as topical applications for wounds, cuts, sores and skin diseases. Topical use of the various parts of manuka was common among early Maoris and settlers. Traditional Maoris use for manuka include baths, steams, topical washes and incense. Manuka oil has been extensively used for generations in New Zealand for its antimicrobial properties. The therapeutic properties of manuka honey are well established. It is used for slow-healing ulcers and wound healing.

Pharmacology and Clinical Studies: Manuka oil was found to possess some antimicrobial properties.

Indications:

  • Integumentary System: Manuka is recommended for treating ringworm, insect bites, athlete's foot, acne, skin eruptions, stubborn ulcers and wounds, cuts and abrasions. It is an excellent insecticidal. It has been suggested that the sesquiterpenes found in manuka are responsible for manuka's ability to reduce skin irritation and promote wound healing.
  • Musculoskeletal System: Manuka oil has a good analgesic effect and is recommended for the relief of muscular aches and pain.
  • Respiratory System: Manuka oil is beneficial for all types of respiratory tract infections and can be used to relieve coughs, cold and flu.
